What is Fluoride?

Fluoride is the ionic form of fluorine and a naturally occurring mineral found in water, soil, and plants. Due to its ability to strengthen tooth enamel and prevent cavities, municipalities often add fluoride to drinking water and dental products. While beneficial in small amounts, excessive concentrations in drinking water can pose serious health and environmental concerns, making monitoring and regulation necessary.

Why is Monitoring Fluoride Important for Drinking Water Treatment Process Optimization?

Monitoring fluoride in drinking water treatment is critical for regulatory compliance and ensuring fluoride levels are safe. In Canada, the maximum acceptable concentration for fluoride in drinking water is 1.5 mg/L. In the U.S., the regulatory limit is 4 mg/L. If these levels are exceeded, health issues like fluorosis, which can lead to discoloration, spots, or damage to teeth and bones can emerge.

Fluoride monitoring is also crucial in PFAS treatment. PFAS do not naturally break down due to its strong carbon-fluorine bond, making PFAS extremely persistent in the environment. When treated, fluorine atoms are released from the PFAs, forming fluoride ions (F) in treated water. The fluoride is monitored as an indicator of PFAS degradation effectiveness.
