What is Fluoride?

Fluoride is the ionic form of fluorine, and a mineral often found in water, soil, and plants. While essential in small amounts, it can cause serious health and environmental concerns in wastewater.

Why is Monitoring Fluoride Important for Wastewater Treatment Process Optimization?

Monitoring fluoride in wastewater treatment is critical for regulatory compliance and ensuring fluoride levels are safe. Several industries including glass manufacturing, semiconductor etching, and aluminum smelting produce wastewater containing high levels of fluoride. If left unmanaged, can cause health issues, known as fluorosis, which can lead to discoloration, spots, or damage to teeth and bones.

Fluoride monitoring is also crucial in PFAS treatment. PFAS do not naturally break down due to its strong carbon-fluorine bond, making PFAS extremely persistent in the environment. When treated, fluorine atoms are released from the PFAs, forming fluoride ions (F) in treated water. The fluoride is monitored as an indicator of PFAS degradation effectiveness.

Online Fluoride Monitoring and Analysis

Traditional methods rely on grab sampling and lab analysis, which can costly and time-consuming. Online ion selective electrode (ISE) eliminates labor costs and additional delays by providing continuous, real-time measurements. The benefits of ISE-based online systems include:

  • Rapid response for immediate process adjustment
  • Ease of integration with other automated analysis and control systems
  • Reliable performance across a wide concentration range.

MANTECH’s MO1000 system uses advanced ISE technology to provide accurate, real-time fluoride measurements. As a stationary online solution, MO1000 provides fast feedback and alerts directly to a remote network or emails, allowing operators to make actionable decisions, leading to treatment efficiency.
